In January, February, and March of 2015 the Voyage Forward Public Engagement Team conducted a broad community engagement effort to help us understand firsthand what members of our community felt about this area and its future. We heard from over 800 people with thousands of comments documented and summarized.
The results of the FOUR Questions provided the Public Engagement Team with the data to conduct a more focused community wide survey based on the emerging themes identified from the FOUR Questions process. We wanted to verify and understand the broader community perspective.

The survey was conducted from June 22nd through July 10th and had 925 respondents. To put this into perspective, the population of Koochiching County (over 18 years old) is 10,529. That is a response rate of almost 9% of the population. If we base the response rate on the number of households in Koochiching County (5,874), the percentage is close to 16%.
Statisticians will argue this was not a scientific survey and we agree. We did not target households or individuals. However, the survey provides an excellent sample of the general perception and attitude of our citizenry. The survey results, coupled with the results of the FOUR Questions and the Economic Adjustment Strategy conducted by Newmark Grubb Knight Frank (NGKF) provide us with a solid foundation to move our community forward.
That is precisely the goal of the Voyage Forward initiative. Identify those issues and needs important to the broad community and create a vision and “Destiny Drivers” to guide our work going forward. We need to formulate the direction and actions necessary to move on major priorities that can transform our community over the coming years.
