Quality of Life

Destiny Driver

Has someone who lives outside of Koochiching County ever asked you, “Why would you want to live there?” How did you answer? Indeed, what brings people to our area? What makes them want to stay? Do you and your neighbors believe there is a good “quality of life” here?

to create a quality of life environment which provides for a healthy and engaged community for residents in all phases of life – is directed toward providing a range of healthy activities and social supports that lead to retaining and growing our population. The Voyage Forward surveys revealed a strong need county wide for increased youth activities, cultural offerings to attract young adults and their families, and for meaningful support and engagement of an aging population.

Families must have the option to “live local” with quality health care as well as educational, cultural and recreational opportunities for all. Surveys by Voyage Forward showed that 65 percent of respondents ranked recreation, arts, culture and youth activities “very high.” Five out of eight ranked a Boys and Girls Club as “most desirable.”

How do we begin?

A dozen individuals have already signed up to help with this driver. Outcomes will include a review of existing needs assessments and making further inquiries. A forum of stakeholders will be convened to determine potential activities, prioritize them and weigh their relative feasibility. Then a task force of community members will act to develop priority recommendations. Possibilities include action around youth activities, inter-generational activity centers, housing, and identifying community service opportunities for engaging youth and younger adults.

Stakeholders

Stakeholders include everyone in the county. Those who will definitely be invited to the table include schools, social providers, care providers, care facilities, libraries, and community centers.

Accomplishments

A Facebook group has been created as an information sharing hub for parents of young children who may be looking for resources and information about raising families in Koochiching County. The group, called Koochiching County Moms, currently has over 500 members and can be joined by making a request at the link:https://www.facebook.com/groups/1789468004621025/  The group is managed by two members of the “Quality of Life” committee of Voyage Forward and resulted from vigorous committee discussion about the availability of day care in the county and other challenges facing young families, especially for those new to the community. We hope it starts some helpful exchanges to benefit the community.
